Not everyone is attached by the umbilical to Facebook

According to this survey, the internet has surpassed newspapers as a source of national and international news for the first time, with only TV still attracting more news viewers. I find it surprising that TV continues to lead, though in the sub-30 bracket the internet and TV are neck and neck. (This is a reminder that not everyone is attached by the umbilical cord to facebook!!) So where would you spend your advertising dollars in this scenario? If this survey spells impending doom for newspapers, where does that leave advertising agencies, still pumping out the media spread of TV, print, bus shelters and cinema ads, with a continued uncertainty of how to milk the millions of online consumers. Online consumers like control, they are a breed apart. They make agencies accountable for every click and purchase. Is 2009 the year of the search engine marketer?

TV will always lead cause people like face to face/people (it's why they like FaceBook too BTW). For TV, it's that chill'in time of day when tea is cooking - we turn it on, and what's on ? the news. Of course the stats will remain higher.

Do we really watch commercials at this time then? No, i don't think so. I think we block them out - just like we block out online ads. Too many distractions going on... ie "where's me tea mum - hang on just wanna let this story finish and i'll be there"...

Where does an ad agency take this then?

Well they should move into the conversation arena - ie building a relationship through whatever mechanism is available. Whether that be through a foto, article, video, whatever...

To be honest, i dont think any of them (or even me) have really grasped what the next stage of advertising will look like. The traditional media guys are way to entrenched in traditional (still) and the onliners are way to entrenched in SEO.

so til we do... i'm sure we will continue on with the debate, new v old.
